Day 208: Han Dang's Baptism

Elder Knapp, Mari, Han, and Elder Lazarev

27 mars 2010 9 (Day 208)
Tra la la! Today Han got baptized! It was quite a busy day. I woke up and cleaned my room, cleaned myself, printed off my talk, and did all those other things to get ready. In the afternoon me and my cute self (straightened hair, Hannah’s navy blue dress with a yellow cardigan) over to Hannah’s room where we practiced the song with Jessica. Jessica is Hannah’s super cute friend from Washington that is Protestant. We headed off when it was time to go and got a lot of stares for looking so good on a fine Saturday afternoon, lol. It was actually kind of annoying. We got there right on time (we arranged to go early to practice singing with the elders) and the gates were locked! While we were waiting Jessica decided that she looked like she was going to a funeral and shouldn’t wear her black tights. She took them off, right there on the sidewalk and then changed her mind and wanted to put them back on. Cue Elders Maxfield and Bourgeois. Needless to say, Jess was screaming, “Tell them to stop! Don’t let them come closer!” and I was laughing and they were trying to look away. Ha ha, oh the sporting life. Elder Bourgeois did say that we looked very nice, which was nice of him to say. I thought I looked awesome in my 50s dress. My favorite comment from the day was when Elder Knapp said seriously, “Can I ask you a question about girls?” “Sure.” “If they are already tall, why do they wear high heels (referring to Hannah, who is tall and was wearing high heels.” I just laughed because I have never worn heels and tried to make my best guess as to why girls ever even wear them.
We practiced with the Elders once the others came which was a good thing. We ended up changing a lot of how we were planning on singing the song. We sounded pretty good though. It was six o’clock, the time of the baptism, and no one was there! Only Jenn, another ISEP student that is in some of my classes was there. A few other members eventually dribbled in, but there were maybe twenty of us total, which is not a lot. The program ended up being a catastrophe…they didn’t even have Han’s name written correctly and I was scheduled to speak first and we were supposed to sing while Han was changing…but the song was for her because it is mostly in English. I gave my talk and it went relatively well. I started to say a word in English but corrected myself and looked at Han because when I looked at the audience I just saw Elder Knapp’s head bobbing up and down. It sort of reminded me of Kirstin holding up time signs, in a bad way. I talked about persevering to the end and Elder Knapp said I did a great job, other than talking too fast and over-articulating. I love contradictions. Even though Han had practiced getting baptized and Elder Lazarev had done his pushups to practice (ha ha…Han maybe weighs 100 pounds) she still didn’t exactly know what was happening. She got baptized though and I went to help her change, which was good because she had left her bag in the kitchen so I went to grab it.
While I was waiting everyone else sang hymns. Elder Knapp and I were putting Han’s wet baptismal dress away and we heard them announcing the special musical number that we were both in! We both went charging into the chapel where everyone was looking around because they were missing 1/3 of the musical number! Zoinks! We sang our song and it turned out really nice even though we messed up on one part. It really wasn’t bad considering how much we did (or didn’t) practice. Anne Garon gave a talk about the Holy Ghost afterwards and then we had a little snack afterwards. Luckily I brought more than one plate, because Hannah and I were the only ones who brought things along. We all talked a little and then cleaned up. Jen said that she really enjoyed the baptism service and that it was different, but that it was good to be in a church again and she felt very honored and privileged to be there.
Jean Luc offered the Elders a ride and they started to pile in when Elder Knapp said, “Come on guys…” There were four of us girls in dresses in the dark (myself, Han, Hannah, and Jessica) and regardless of Elder Knapp’s gallantry the Elders got in the car and we ladies made the trek to the tram station alone. A man on a bicycle stopped us and asked me (in French) about the church we came out of. He said that he had people visit his house before, but that he didn’t know anything about it and that he was wondering when we have services and such. I gave him a brief explanation and got him a pass along card and invited him to come on Sunday at 9am. He said that was early so I said he could just make it around 11am for the most important part. He asked if all four of us would be there, to which I said yes. He then responded that he would be there at nine tomorrow. Now during all this time in the alternate universe of the missionaries….
They had started to go their merry way off in the car when they saw that we were stopped on the sidewalk. By a man. They decided that this didn’t look good. They proceeded to get out of the car and try to get a better look to see if this man was harassing us. They were still worried. They decided to do a little drive by and drive around. They called my cell phone (which I didn’t answer because I was teaching this man) to see if we needed help. They waited nearby until the man left and then came closer and asked what happened and if we were all right. I told them what happened and they went off. During their time in the car Elder Knapp said that he saw that I was giving him a piece of paper and just started to laugh because he knew exactly what I was doing. I thought it was special (and especially funny) that it was Elder Bourgeois, the one who made the determining decision that they were not walking with us, was the Elder the most concerned and trying to call us. Good karma.

It was neat talking to Han about being baptized. She really felt a difference and said she wasn’t nervous when it happened even though she was terrified because everyone would be staring at her. I counseled her to write it all down. I also rolled my ankle twice walking to the tram station. It was fun. Probably a good thing the missionaries weren’t there to laugh at me.

Day 207: Monoprix

26 mars 2010 (Day 207)
Today was a day that was busy filled with classes and more grocery shopping. I sluffed institute so that I could write my talk and so that Hannah and I could go shopping and she bought me a birthday present from H&M. We went to Monoprix, this GIANT Walmart like institution. There I bought some drinkable yogurt. This very odd man approached me asking me if it was good and like Yop, the name brand drinkable yogurt. It was strange. Monoprix has lots of organic products…love it!
Hannah is letting me borrow the blue dress that she bought yesterday for the baptism. I ended up staying up until around midnight to write my talk. I actually rewrote it. Well, all in all I have three different talks. The first one, where I took Elder Knapp’s counsel of making it for non-members and like teaching a lesson too far, the second in English, and the third and final the English version translated.

Day 206: Dress Shopping

25 mars 2010 (Day 206)

Um, today wasn’t very exciting. I woke up and was way sad that Elder Lazarev will be leaving Nantes (no more stalking Chinese people :[ ). After going to my linguistically oriented classes I went to the gym, like usual. Today I did something exciting though, I hung upside down.

Afterwards I made some fantastic pesto pasta with sweet corn and mushrooms. I can’t believe my parents never fed me mushrooms! They are so amazingly delicious sautéed.

Hannah and I went dress shopping today. We want to have dresses for Han’s baptism. Hannah bought two dresses and I didn’t find anything except for a headband. I had fun though. Hannah found a cute pink dress and this awesome blue dress that is straight out of the fifties!

Day 205: Chinese Ravioli

Dough, innards, and dipping sauce
The crew

24 mars 2010 (Day 205)
This morning, holding to Emily Walker birthday traditions, Hannah and I woke up and called Elder Ellsworth to sing him happy birthday as terribly as humanly conceivable. The elders didn’t answer so we left a message singing but then Elder E called back, still asleep and very confused. He thought we were calling from America, but he loved it a lot and said he was crying, lol.
I succeeded to almost follow the outline of my French lit teacher today! I did an awesome hour of cross training at the gym jumping back and forth between the rowing machine and the stationary bike. It was intense. I miss running outside though (I haven’t been since I rolled my ankle because my other ankle has gotten worse).
Tonight I cut Jen’s hair. She asked me to, so of course I did it since her ends were pretty trashed. She came out alive and with most of her hair, so I guess I succeeded! Tonight the Chinese people on our floor made a Chinese dinner for us as a goodbye party. We didn’t start eating until 9:30 pm! They made ravioli that was amazing. They had dough and they stuffed it with green onion and meat. They boiled the ravioli and then we dipped it in a sauce with garlic, soy sauce, and vinegar. I helped make some of the ravioli and unsuccessfully tried to dip them with chop sticks.

Day 204: Adventures at English Lessons

23 mars 2010 (Day 204)
Today was a pretty normal Tuesday. I woke up and did my laundry, went to the gym, and then went to English class. Elder Bourgeois and Maxfield were super late to get to the church and unlock the gate. We actually started having English class in a nice little park near the church. Jean-Yves (an middle-aged larger man who smokes and has been going to English class forever) was the only lower level student so I did some one on one stuff with him. We were going over fruit and he started telling me about how he used to take LSD and then walked for 12 km every day. Weird! To practice his accent he was reading a poem by Robert Frost. Elder Knapp and Elder Ellsworth (they had exchanges today) came just in time to hear Jean Yves fail at saying “first.” He kept on saying “thirst” and it took a very long time to get him to say “first.” It was definitely an entertaining/awkward night with Jean Yves. Early that evening he asked me if I had a boyfriend to which I replied no and then he felt really badly after that. He then told me he didn’t have a girlfriend either so that it was okay.
Going home was great tonight. Elder Ellsworth is such an angel! He is so sincere and has such an earnest young missionary spirit, I love it! He is from Rigby, Idaho and is a great kid who is turning twenty tomorrow! He definitely made up for the rudeness of Elder Knapp. Apparently I am speaking at Han’s baptism. Elder Knapp just didn’t tell me this. He told everyone at the weekly ward missionary meeting though. I learned about my talk from Joel Garon who told me I should talk to Elder Knapp about it. He just smiled at me and told me it should be 5-7 minutes on enduring to the end. This talk shall definitely be an adventure, for it is to be in French!

Day 203: Legal in America

22 mars 2010 (Day 203)
I’m legal now. Woot. This morning I went to Carrefour, the gym, sewed my umbrella back together, and threw out a spoiled boiled egg among other things. Apparently if your fridge freezes your hardboiled egg it makes it go bad. I was kind of sad; I was super excited for an egg salad sandwich. I took Hannah to Carrefour because she had never been. We ended up getting some very American looking granola and lots of fruits and veggies. Hannah loved looking at all the window displays in the mall…she is definitely a girl!
I went to the church to meet up with Han and the elders. When I got there they were talking to this Muslim man who had just left his church and is looking for a Christian church and wants to learn more…golden! We had another good lesson with Han. I was thinking I could persuade the elders to let me buy them ice cream (public place, it is allowed) but they had another appointment. It is there P-Day. They apparently had 5 lessons today. They did sing me the best ‘Happy Birthday’ rendition that I have ever heard. Elder Knapp and Lazarev informed me that they like girls who dress up and look nice all the time. Before this Elder Knapp told me he could tell that I wasn’t a very ‘girly girl’…ha. Thanks boys! Elder Knapp did give me a kiss (mother…it was a mint).
Hannah texted me to come over to her room so I did straight from the tram. Cheryl popped out of Hannah’s bathroom. I was very confused. They decided to surprise me for my birthday and got me brownies and a bracelet. I made Cheryl some pesto pasta…she has never had pesto and she loved it. I made myself some delicious chili with peppers, corn, tomatoes, black beans, and stuck it on rice. It was delicious! I did have a tummy ache at the end of the night though.

Day 202: Beautiful Savior

21 mars 2010 (Day 202)

Oh boy was it a crazy stressful morning. I am pretty sure I woke Wubin up when I called him at 8am to remind him that our ride was coming at 8:15. Armelle was a little bit grumpy today but she and Stephane were nice enough to Wubin. To remember his name they started to call him Wu-be-wan Kanobi (like Obi Wan Kanobi from Star Wars). It was awesome because Han, Tao, Wubin, and Little Dragon (aka Justin, but his Chinese name translated is just cooler) were all at church. Someone brought a cake for the choir that was delicious and I got to hold adorable baby Seth today for a little bit.

After church I started looking for a song that Hannah and I could sing with the elders at Han’s baptism. Hannah and I decided on Beautiful Savior. We ended up translating some of it and adding some extra verses. It is really cool, I am super excited. We spent most of the evening working on it. We called the missionaries to see how they thought it sounded/approve of the changes. They ended up putting us on speakerphone and our singing attracted a Muslim preacher who wants to talk with the missionaries now!
